Castello di Verduno

Region: Piemonte

History

This beautiful and historic 10 hectare estate was originally bought from the royal House of Savoy by the Burlotto family in 1909. However, it was through the marriage between Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco a few decades later that these two traditional wine-producing families really consolidated their assets - prime vineyards in the Langa heartland, and generations of quality Barbaresco and Barolo-making experience.
There is a profound history that comes with the company, “Castello di Verduno”, that now belongs to Gabriella Burlotto and Franco Bianco. The history of Savoia and King Charles Albert correlates with that of the Burlotto and Bianco families and are intertwined with a unique passion for one of the most noble grape varieties, The Nebbiolo. After spending 15 years in Eritrea, in 1950, Commander Giovanni Battista Burlotto, returned to Verduno where he decided to create a food and wine meeting point with accommodation. Now, the three daughters of Giovanni Battista Burlotto and their respective families devote their time to the Castello di Verduno: hotel, restaurant, winery and farmhouse
Today, Mario Andrion is their inspired enologist, and still vinifies wine in the traditional way.
Wines are fermented in open vat in Verduno and bottled in Barbaresco. Annual output is an estimated 60,000 bottles.

Estate

Today the Castello di Verduno estate owns vineyards in Barbaresco and Verduno. The cellar is in the Barbaresco area where the six wines (Barbaresco, Barolo, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo and Verduno Pelaverga) are vinified.
The wines are bottled in Verduno. They are stored and aged in the century-old cellars within the walls of the castle. It is here also at the Verduno Castle where their grappa is distilled from Nebbiolo and Pelaverga.
