Guido Porro

Region: Piemonte

History

Guido, representing the fourth generation of the Porro family, oversees an estate in Serralunga d’Alba that has traditionally been inherited from father to son. Fabio, now the fifth generation, is contributing significantly to the family business. The Porro family has been making wine in the Langhe hills since the early 1900s, though it has only been since the 1980s that they have been bottling their own wines rather than selling in bulk to local cooperatives.
In more recent history, the family inherited a 0.7H plot in the famed “Vigna Rionda” MGA in Serralunga d’Alba.

Estate

All of Guido’s Barolos come from 3 MGAs in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. Out of their plots in the Lazzarito MGA, come the Barolos “Lazzairasco” and “Vigna St. Caterina”. Notably, Lazzarito’s clayey soils have proved highly valuable as dry conditions continue to affect the Langhe area in recent vintages. Despite sharing the same MGA, Lazzairasco and Vigna St Caterina sites have diverging exposures and altitudes which contribute to their subtle differences in the bottle.
Their other two Barolos are “Gianetto” and “Vigna Rionda”. The Gianetto MGA tends to be cooler and wetter than Lazzarito, yet their southeast facing parcel in this ‘Cru’ makes a bold yet elegant Barolo.
When the family acquired the parcel in Vigna Rionda MGA, the vineyard was in a poor state. Guido carefully replanted the vines and since 2014 have been producing this highly reputable wine, a stellar addition to it to its already star-studded line up of Serralunga Barolos. Despite their youth, these vines are already producing fabulous wines with the helping hand of the Porro family's expertise in the cellar.
