Cissone Family

1735 | Giovanni Antonio Cissone, advocate and prince of the Forum of Turin was unmarried, wealthy, intelligent and ambitious.

On March 9th, 1735, King Charles Emmanuel awarded Giovanni Antonio Cissone the district of Santa Maria, within the jurisdiction of the city of Alba and the ancient fief of Santa Vittoria d’Alba. This gave him the right to the title of Count of Castelborgo, reversible to his nephew and heir, Manfredo.

The Bongiovanni Family

1735 | Manfredo Bongiovanni, financed by donations from his uncle, began constructing the aristocratic palazzo which later became the Castello di Neive. One of the wealthiest landowners in the area, more than 500 Piedmontese giornate, equivalent to 200 hectares were attributed to him. He is considered to be the founder of the house of Castelborgo.

The construction of the Castello

Marble inscriptions in the Castle chapel indicate that building was finished in 1753, accordingly the castle took around 15 years to build. Both Giovanni Antonio Cissone and Manfredo Bongiovanni are cited in the inscriptions.

Recent History

The Stupino family has owned the winery since 1964 which consists of 60 hectares of land. One of the most merited vineyards is Santo Stefano which has a unique microclimate, exposure, slope and soil ideal for the production of Barbaresco and Barbera d”Alba. In 2016, Italo Stupino opened ‘La Casetta del Castello di Neive’, a second technical winery optimised for pressing, fermenting, and maintaining bottles at a controlled temperature.

The Stupino family previously owned various vineyards prior to the purchase of the Castle. These were Messoirano, Montebertotto, Valtorta and Basarin. The vineyards that were then acquired with the castle were Santo Stefano, Gallina, iCortini and Marcorino. Of the 60 hectares of land, 26 are dedicated to the cultivation of grapes and 20 to hazelnuts.

The Castello di Neive estate has two cellars. The historic cellar in the castle itself and, as previously mentioned, the recently constructed, ‘La Casetta del Castello di Neive’ cellar adapted for the improved management of procedures that require added precision and technology.
