Tre Rose

There is various evidence suggesting that the existence of this farm dates back to the roman times. The estate is located in a strategic position between two important communication routes used between the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D, the Via Lauretana and the Canale Maestro della Chiana (The Master Canal of the Chiana area).

The Trerose villa is situated in the area between Lake Trasimeno, Valiano and Cortona and was commissioned by Cardinal Silvio Passerini in 1521. The cardinal’s presence is visible still to this day through the ‘Cardinals Passage’. This secret tunnel, leading from the building all the way to Umbria, was used as an escape route during the difficult years of tension between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States.

The Trerose estate borders Umbria and Lake Trasimeno, extending over 200 hectares that covers 5 hills in the southern part of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano appellation. Only the highest parts of these hills are planted with vineyards, around 103 hectares, and the rest of their land is mainly olive groves and arable land.

Thanks to the high quality of mixed soil, vines don't suffer from drought in summer as they do in other elevated parts of Tuscany. These valleys, which were once teeming with rivers, are rich in sand, clay, and silt.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano became the first Italian DOC in 1966 and then a DOCG in 1980. At the Trerose estate, I Palazzi, Belvedere, Lodola, Poggetto and Santa Caterina make up the 103 hectares of vineyards which are almost entirely planted with Sangiovese (known as Prugnolo Gentile in this area).
