Malvasia del Lazio

Description

*Malvasia is a catch all name fro a group of varieties whose scions perhaps originiated in the same Greek locality (the Peloponnesian port of Monemvasia). In truth, the Venetians in the middle ages transported various wines, sweet, dry, aromatic and non under the general name Malvasia – perhaps the reason for the disparity Aka Puntinata, a somewhat better quality Malvasia sub-variety than the other Malvasias

Principle Wines

Frascati blend (even though the lesser Candida variety is quoted)
Malvasia di Candia

Description

*Malvasia is a catch all name for a group of varieties whose scions perhaps originiated in the same Greek locality (the Peloponnesian port of Monemvasia). In truth, the Venetians in the middle ages transported various wines, sweet, dry, aromatic and non under the general name Malvasia – perhaps the reason for the disparity. The Candia variety is not aromatic in any muscatty sense, its only distinction is its blandness.

Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone DOC

Description

In dry, sweet and spumante versions, this is one of Italy's most historic wines, whose name come from a historical event in 1000 AD when a Bishop's servant was sent on a head of his master to identify where he should stop to taste good wine. When he came to the town of Monefiascone he wrote on the door "est" (this is it!) 3 times to exclaim how good it was. In reality, this is a fairly simple white wine, in some cases achieving a nice richness from a good dollop of Malvasia

Principle Wines

Procanico (Trebbiano Toscano), Malvasia Bianca Toscana, Ressetto (Trebbiano Giallo)
Frascati DOC

Description

Perhaps Italy's most famous wine export, certainly for white wine and perhaps is now a victim of that previous success. As the Italian wine machine has reached for the skies in terms of quality, Frascati has largely been left behind. Never a wine to write poetry about (not even in Horace's day), there are however, many decent commercial examples.

Principle Wines

Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Trebbiano Toscano; Malvasia del Lazio (puntinata), Greco, Trebbiano Giallo, Bellone, Bombino bianco
