Location

Flanked by the Adriatic, this is the medieval borderlands between imperial/ Teutonic influenced Northern Italy and the Papal States (hence the name which is where the influence of the currency "mark" finished). Ancona is the capital, a once important Roman port

Climate

Mediterranean, with mild winters mitigated by the Adriatic although strong Maestrale winds can be bitingly cold in winter but refreshing in the summer.

Topography

To the west the lands rise steadily towards the Appennines and the borders of Tuscany and Umbria

Description

As the name suggests, a white grape which has a long history in the Marche but much less importance than Verdicchio. Seems to have some relation with Passerina from Abruzzo.

Red grape peculiar to this part of Italy making a very charcherful early drinking fruity and aromatic red wine. Some have very interesting floral, violet aromas.

Description

Maceratino is a green grape that has its own appelation in the Marche where it gives a light and fresh white wine. The vineyards of the DOC constitute of 200 Ha. only and is in further decline. There has been mention of possible relations to both reco and verdicchio.

Verdicchio

Description

Le Marche's white grape of some importance in the Italian white wine offering. Ancient, indigenous, there are some sub varieties: Verdicchio Bianco, Verde, Giallo and Vero. Verdicchio's quality can be seen in its variety of flavour from green apples to a more late harvest honied style, and also its longevity. The amphora shaped bottle is now seen as more of a liability.

Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC

Description

Native to this area north of Ancona in the commune of Morro d'Alba, Lacrima in its dry, sweet and and sparkling versions cam produce some ethereal perfumes of red, pink and violet flowers. Its pronounced acidity also guarantees a fresh finish, suggesting a summery context.

This historic wine and winegrowing area derives its name from the strategic importance it once held on this medieval borderland and hence the string of Castles around the town of Jesi. Verdicchio is one of Italy's unsung white grapes for real quality potential in terms of complexity, persistence, ageing and pure enjoyment.
